Klickitat Co., Washington

County Capsule

In 1853, the first Columbia River Gorge settlers chose to cross the river and settle on the Washington side of the Mighty Columbia. By the 1880's, many pioneers were claiming land on both sides of the river, having been attracted by vast acres of bunch-grass, a year round natural pasture, fine climate and an abundance of rivers and creeks. These pioneers plowed much of the grass-land into wheat farms, and later into orchards and vineyards. Agriculture remains an important component of the county economy, dominated by forestry, hay and wheat production, orchards, and vineyards.

Klickitat County had an estimated population of 20,335 in 2006, up from 19,161, in 2000. The population is spread over 1,872 square miles (about the size of Delaware) of mountain, range-land, canyon and river side in the South-Central part of Washington. Its residents reside in cultural and historic communities which provide various cultural and business accommodations and world-class attractions.

County per capita income is $24,809 in 2204, up from $22,519 in 2000, but trails the stateand national averages of $35,041 and $33,050. The County's total assessed value increased to $1.476 billion in 2005, up from $773.2 million in 1994, and $607 million in 1990. The development of new residential lands from rural residential discovery has aided the growth.

Klickitat County is home to a wide variety of geological and natural features. As a gateway to the Columbia River Gorge, the Cascade Mountains, the Gifford-Pinchot National Forest, the Conboy Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and the Mt. Adams Recreation area, Klickitat County is a popular destination for outdoor recreationists. Visitors may even follow in the footsteps of Lewis & Clark, who, on their 1805 Corp of Discovery expedition to the Pacific Ocean, camped at the mouth of the White Salmon River.

A wonderful place to live, Klickitat County offers a rural quality-of-life; numerous outdoor recreational opportunities; strong local schools; healthy, family-oriented environment; reasonable tax structure with no personal income tax; and rural living in a spectacularly beautiful setting, yet near the Portland metropolitan area. Klickitat County is not only a great place to visit, it's a great place to live and work.
